Juxtaposition Arts offers a variety of programs to students of all ages and backgrounds. The following is a brief description of the programs JA is currently offering.

Studio Arts Program

The Studio Arts Program is an intermediate level program where youth learn from and work alongside professional artists using quality tools and working in a variety of mediums. Hands-on activities such as drawing, painting, sculpting, print making and collage are offered. The curriculum emphasizes fine art creation, artistic critique and interpretation, art history, and end of session art exhibition Studio Arts Program sessions last six to ten-weeks. Sessions are conducted twice annually usually beginning in October and February.

Community Murals

Juxta’s most publicly visible program. Its an advanced summer long program where Twin Cities’ teens, community businesses, and professional muralists collaborate to design and render large-scale, public artworks. It is a dynamic way to engage young artists. Mural work requires young people to cooperate with fellow team members to reach the desired result. Creating public artwork gives youth a sense of ownership of their neighborhoods public spaces. Murals can symbolize community and promote neighborhood pride. The youths contribution to their neighborhoods live beyond the life of a project, as an extremely visible reminder of a job well done. Juxta youth and artists have created thirteen community murals throughout inner city Minneapolis.

Community Arts Partnership

This is an artists in residence program, tailored to meet the requirements and interests of the students and the collaborating organization. Juxta is very interested in helping schools to develop partnership programs that utilize the arts in history, social studies and other non-arts classrooms. Recent projects have included a for credit art class at Chiron Downtown Middle School where students created paintings and collage around the theme of the integration of public schools in Little Rock Arkansas in 1957; a six week science-themed soft mural workshop at Crawford school; an outdoor after school mural project with kids from the Cecil Newman Resource Center.
